Tape off an area 8 feet by 8 feet on the floor. Have eleven people stand in this space. How crowded does this feel? This is how much space the Pilgrims had aboard the Mayflower.
Eat a typical meal that was served on the Mayflower. Have beef jerky, soda crackers, cheese, and water. Can you imagine eating this three times a day for 66 days? The Pilgrims ate a lot of dried salted meat, hard crackers called hard tack and cheese. In 1620 the Pilgrims preserved their food by salting and drying it.
Fill a one-liter clear plastic bottle about half full with mineral oil. Add a few drops of food coloring. Then fill the rest of the bottle with water. Add a small plastic ship to represent the Mayflower. Screw the top on tightly and tape it closed. Make waves by shaking, rocking, and rolling the bottle. Does the plastic ship ride the waves or sink?
|Make costumes like the Pilgrims and Native Americans wore.|
Act out the first Thanksgiving.
