American History The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was a fought between the communist government of North Vietnam supported by communist countries such as the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union and the government of Southern Vietnam supported by anti-communist countries such as the United States. The war lasted for 20 years from November 1, 1955 - April 30, 1975. The United States lost the war when American troops were withdrawn in 1973. This enabled South Vietnam to be completely taken over by communist forces in 1975. Over 58,000 Americans died during the war.
