The Cold War was a period of tension between the democratic countries of Western Europe, Australasia, and the Americas and the communist countries of Eastern Europe.The United States led the Western World and the Soviet Union led Eastern Europe. The two superpowers never officially declared war. Instead they fought indirectly through arms and space races. The Cold War began shortly after World War II and lasted until the Soviet Union collaspsed in 1991.
