The American Civil War was fought between the northern and southern states of the US. The southern states wanted to break away and form their own nation, and the northern states wanted them to stay. This war lasted 4 years and resulted in the deaths of roughly 620,000 soldiers. About 1,264,000 American soldiers have died in the nation's wars making the Civil War the most deadly American war.
