World War II ~ Lesson 9 The United Nations

The League of Nations was formed after World War I. This group tried to get nations to talk about problems before wars started. The League did not work because it had no power. The League ended because after the group realized they could not do anything to stop Italy's attack on Ethiopia.

In October 1943, President Roosevelt called government leaders from the United States, China, England, and Russia. They spoke of starting a new organization after the war ended.

On April 25, 1945 leaders from fifty nations met in San Francisco, California. The organization was called the United Nations. The group wrote a constitution. The United Nations Charter was signed by President Truman and representatives from 49 nations on June 26, 1945.

The group studied problems and suggested ways to solve them. When a group majority agree, a resolution is passed. They hope the countries with the problems will listen to and act on the plan.
