Around 3100 BCE
Ancient Egypt was divided into two lands known as Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. The terms upper and lower refer to the flow of the Nile River instead of compass directions. The northern part was known as Lower Egypt. It contained the Nile Delta that flowed into the Mediterranean Sea. Upper Egypt stretched from Aswan southward.
Around 3100 BCE, Memes united the two kingdoms and became the first pharaoh of Egypt. He is considered the founding figure of Ancient Egypt. Menes ended the fighting and created a government that lasted for many years, He became known as the ruler of the Two Lands.
Upon uniting the White Crown of Upper Egypt and the Lower Crown of Lower Egypt, the two kingdoms became one. Go here to see how to create the double crowns.
