Real research papers written by fourth grade students — useful for modeling the research writing process, setting expectations, and inspiring young writers before they begin their own animal reports.
Students used a structured outline template to research their selected animals, organizing facts into five categories: physical description, habitat, food, young, and special characteristics. The completed outlines were then developed into multi-paragraph research papers. Students typed their reports during computer lab time and presented them to parents dressed as their chosen animal.
These pages are shared as examples to help teachers model the research writing process and give students a clear picture of what a finished report looks like before they begin their own.
The complete research writing unit includes the outline template, paragraph writing organizers, a grading rubric, and step-by-step lesson guides — everything needed to take students from choosing an animal to presenting a finished paper.
