American History The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War ~ Lesson 2 The United States becomes Involved

After the French left Vietnam, the United States worked out a plan. The Communist would control North Vietnam and the South would be ruled by a Vietnamese president with the help of the French and the United States governments.

The Communist guerillas from the north continued to attack the south. They wanted to command the entire country. Because the South Vietnamese government was not liked by many of the people, some South Vietnamese people helped the Communists.

In the early 1960s, President Kennedy decided the South Vietnamese were going to fall to the Communist if the United States did not help. Kennedy sent 15,000 soldiers to Vietnam. The soldiers were sent to train the Vietnamese troops. Many American soldiers were fighting the war.
