Online Prefix and Suffix Games

Tip - Inspirational Quotes

Find an inspirational quote that will inspire your child to become a better reader. This one by Dr. Seuss is great, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

Print the quote out and frame it. Place the framed quote in a location close to where your child does his/her homework.

Here are printable versions of the Dr. Seuss quote. You can select one for a boy or a girl.

Thinking Outside the Box

Encourage your child to read cereal boxes. Many types of cereal boxes are designed to interest kids with games and trivia. After reading the fun stuff, ask questions like these: What are the top ingredients? How much does the box hold? How many calories are in a serving?

Activity to Try

Read a graphic novel with your child. Graphic novels are similar to comic books because they use art to tell a story; however, there are some differences. Graphic novels are usually stand-alone stories with complex plots. They are great for reluctant readers because there is less text, and a series of illustrations helps tell the story. Many classics have been rewritten in this style such as The Wizard of Oz and The Hardy Boys. You can also find more current titles written as graphic novels such as Redwall, Artemis Fowl, The Baby-Sitters Club, and Coraline.
