The Greek calendar was divided into months. The months began with the new moon. The months were named after festivals in each city.

Today's geometry is based on the ideas of Pythagoras and Euclid. Pythagoras was born on Samos in 580 B. C. He thought he could understand the secrets of the universe by finding patterns in numbers. He discovered many fundamental patterns in our number system.
The Greeks were great engineers. On the island of Samos they dug a tunnel a half a mile long.
Eratosthenes drew the first good map of the world. It was not flat like the previously drawn maps. Eratosthenes even measured the size of the earth. Aristarchus figured the earth was small compared to the sun. He also said the earth revolved around the sun.
