Ancient Egypt Saqqara

Saqqara

Djoser, son of Khaskhemwy, ruled during the third Dynasty around 2630 BC. He ruled for almost twenty years. He engaged his vizier Imhotep to build him a pyramid to protect his remains. The structure was built by adding one mastaba on top of another. There were a total of six terraces each about 200 feet high. This was later called the Great Step Pyramid. It is the oldest monumental architecture still in existence.

Saqqara
The Step Pyramid was built at Saqqara, the burial ground near the capital of Memphis. It included not only the pyramid, but a group of shrines and related buildings as well.
