Before that, people used bread crumbs as erasers!<\/span><\/li><li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pencils can write in zero gravity and underwater.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><h4>Buttons:<\/h4><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Buttons have been used for thousands of years. <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The oldest known button, made from a curved shell,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0dates back over 5,000 years to the Indus Valley Civilization.<\/span><\/li><li>Buttons weren\u2019t always used for fastening. In the 13th century, they were primarily decorative and didn\u2019t become standard fasteners until later,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0when buttonholes <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were invented<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><h4>Paper Clips:<\/h4><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>The paper clip we know today was patented in 1899.<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Norwegian inventor Johan Vaaler designed it, which has since become a staple in offices worldwide.<\/span><\/li><li>During World War II, the paper clip became a symbol of resistance.<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> In Norway, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">people wore paper clips on their lapels as a sign of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> unity and resistance against Nazi occupation.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><h4>Post-It Notes:<\/h4><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Post-it notes were invented by accident.<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> In 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver at 3M attempted to create a strong adhesive but made a low-tack, reusable adhesive that eventually led to Post-It Notes.<\/span><\/li><li>They almost didn\u2019t make it to market.<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The initial launch in 1977 failed because consumers didn\u2019t understand the product. A re-launch in 1980 with samples given away for free was a huge success, and Post-It Notes became an office essential.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p>Have each student research and write a sentence or two about their chosen object\u2019s unique characteristics or history.
