This set features the following abolitionists:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: kgkindergarten;\">Henry &#8220;Box&#8221; Brown<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"container text-center\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/bookunitsteacher.com\/blog\/feb2015\/brown.png\" alt=\"Henry \" width=\"278\" height=\"194\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This slave mailed himself from Richmond to the home of an abolitionist in Philadelphia. Later he became free.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: kgkindergarten;\">Sojourner Truth<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"container text-center\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/bookunitsteacher.com\/blackhistory\/truth.jpg\" alt=\"Sojourner Truth\" width=\"187\" height=\"269\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This slave was freed in 1827. She began lecturing about the issue of slavery. She was a forceful speaker. Many people listened to her causes. He taught himself to read and write. He ran away from his master. Later he\u00a0wrote a book that told of his life as a slave and gave lectures to groups of abolitionists<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: kgkindergarten;\">William Lloyd Garrison<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"container text-center\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/bookunitsteacher.com\/blog\/feb2015\/garrison.gif\" alt=\"William Lloyd Garrison\" width=\"261\" height=\"320\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In 1831 a Boston newspaper called <i>The Liberator<\/i> was published. The editor was an abolitionist. He used the newspaper to tell Congress and the world that slavery must be abolished. In 1833 he and others formed the National Antislavery Society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: kgkindergarten;\">Harriet Tubman<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"container text-center\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/bookunitsteacher.com\/blackhistory\/tubman.jpg\" alt=\"Harriet Tubman\" width=\"200\" height=\"252\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This lady guided more than 300 slaves along the Underground Railroad. This was a chain of homes and farms where escaped slaves could go for help. The chain of safe houses ran to Canada where the slaves could be free.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: kgkindergarten;\">Harriet Beecher Stowe<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"container text-center\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/bookunitsteacher.com\/blog\/feb2015\/stowe.jpg\" alt=\"Harriet Beecher Stowe\" width=\"254\" height=\"292\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This lady lived in Hartford, Connecticut. Her father was an abolitionist. She visited a plantation in Kentucky. There she learned about slavery. She wrote a book about the cruelty of slavery called <i>Uncle Tom&#8217;s Cabin<\/i>. This book was published in 1852. It became a best-seller in the North.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; font-size: medium;\">Three versions of these cards are offered: one with blanks for students to write their own sentences; one with the sentences provided but with blank spaces for students to write in keywords; and one with the answers provided.
