3 Hatchet Projects - Raspberry Hot Chocolate, Dioramas, and Jackdaw

Project #1 - Raspberry-Vanilla Cocoa

One of Brian's biggest challenges in Hatchet is finding food. First he discovers choke cherries. Brian knows these berries are not poisonous because the birds eat them. They are extremely bitter, but with pangs of hunger Brian is forced to eat them. Later in Chapter 7, Brian locates a raspberry patch. What a find! Even with the threat of a bear who also likes raspberries, Brian gathers enough berries to eat some and save some for later. After reading about Brian's discovery we made raspberry hot chocolate. Here's the recipe:

Raspberry-Vanilla Cocoa Mix

6 cups instant powdered milk
2 (8 ounces) jars French vanilla flavored coffee creamer
1 (16 ounces) package powdered sugar
1 (15 ounces) package powdered chocolate milk mix
1 (0.15 ounce) envelope raspberry drink mix (like Kool-aid)
1/2 teaspoon salt

Makes 13 cups of mix

1. In your biggest mixing bowl, combine all ingredients well.
2. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry spot.
3. To serve: Pour 6 ounces of hot water over about 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons of mix.
4. Stir well.
5. Just fill up a canister with the mix and don't forget to include serving instructions!

Project #2 - Dioramas of Brian's Shelter

Brian learns a lesson the hard way. One night a skunk enters his small cave. The skunk not only eats Brian's turtle eggs but sprays him in the face. Once Brian recovers from the temporary blindness caused by the skunk's spray, he builds a better home. See dioramas of Brian's shelter below.

Project #3 - Jackdaw Project

Hatchet

The term jackdaw comes from the British name for a relative of the crow that picks up brightly colored objects and carries them off to its nest. Our ‘jackdaw’ is a collection of artifacts from the story Hatchet.
