Richard Nixon was elected President in 1968. One of the first things he did after becoming President was make friends with China and the U.S.S.R. Nixon wanted to limit the number of nuclear missiles the United States and the Soviets could have.
In 1970 the United States and the U.S.S.R. began what was called SALT talks (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty). These talks brought about a treaty to limit the number of weapons the two countries had.
In 1971, China invited an American ping-pong team to play in China. This was one of the first signs of friendship. In 1972, Nixon visited China. After the visit, trade started between the two countries. Also Americans were allowed to visit China.
In the United States prices began to rise. With fewer military goods being made after the Vietnam War ended, many people were without work.
