Adages and Proverbs Anchor Chart

This anchor chart gives definitions for adages and proverbs and provides examples.

Adage Definition - an old and well-known saying that expresses a general truth

Proverb Definition - a brief famous saying (such as “Too many cooks spoil the broth.”) that advises about how people should live or that expresses a belief that is generally thought to be true

As you can see, the definitions are very close. I have seen some exercises where students sort sayings by adage and proverb. This is very subjective. Different references may list the same saying as being both. Instead, I work with students to understand the meanings of the expression.

Origins and History

Adages and proverbs have been passed down through generations, often originating from folklore, literature, and oral traditions. They provide insight into the wisdom and values of different cultures.

Examples and Analysis

  • Adage: "Actions speak louder than words." - This adage emphasizes the importance of actions over promises or intentions.
  • Proverb: "The early bird catches the worm." - This proverb suggests that success comes to those who prepare well and put in effort early.
