Summary of Chapter 9 ~ The Queen of the Field Mice

As the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow wait at the edge of the poppy field for Dorothy to awaken, the Tin Woodman sees a wildcat chasing a field mouse. The Tin Woodman swings his axe and chops off the wildcat’s head. The Tin Woodman then learns the mouse is actually the Queen of the Field Mice. In return for saving her life, the field mice will help rescue the Lion. The Scarecrow sends the Tin Woodman to build a cart. He asks the field mice to gather string. Together they go into the poppy field. They heft the Lion onto the cart and pull him free of the poppy’s poisonous smell.
